For his trajectory in the clubs of Ibiza, and his association with our hotel Ocean Drive Ibizais one of the three DJ's we wanted to pay tribute to in the celebrating our 25th anniversaryas part of the campaign "made of music, made of moments".along with John Digweed and Armin Van Buuren.
We met up for an interview and chat with Kerri Chandler at Ocean Drive Ibiza, where he was staying, as he was DJing that night at Club Chinois Ibiza, next to the hotel. For him we are "home". The familiarity of our staff makes him feel at home. There is no better compliment we could receive from him.
We start the conversation in a very spontaneous way. Kerri doesn't need any rope to start talking about music, her great passion, and when we ask her about her career, she confirms what is so evident in her sets: she always wanted to be a DJ, it was clear to her since she was a child! "There was always music playing at home. We had a lot of records everywhere. All my cousins, my aunts, and my whole family are DJs and are connected to the music world in some way. Without looking for it, it's kind of a family business and I got into it very early on, playing records and listening to all kinds of genres.... music was all I had known since I was a child"
Curiously, as we have seen in other DJs who are crazy about music, he doesn't like to be pigeonholed into a specific genre either. He is one of those who thinks that, if it's good music, it should be played. And that is precisely what he does in his sessions.
In conversation, we come to analyse the current house scene in Ibiza. He thinks that many promoters only look at the island from a purely economic point of view, a trendy place where "things happen", but for him it's different. He has full confidence in his team to go to the right places to play. For him, coming to Ibiza is an experience where he feels he has the opportunity to meet other DJ's, experience new adventures, find out about and study new genres that are being played on the island... that's where he keeps his focus. "Being a real DJ, it's not about champagne, stunning women and drugs. You work a lot, you travel a lot, you spend a lot of time alone.... You have to be patient and you cannot be vulnerable.
In a moment of nostalgia, we come to his beginnings in Ibiza. His first time was in Es Paradisin the early 1990s. "I think what impressed me most about the club was that I had never seen an open-air space done like that. That was my first encounter with Ibiza nightlife. Kerri is down to earth, she speaks with a lot of humility and respect for her work. She knows that success has behind it many hours and effort. Perhaps because he has always been clear about his goal as a DJ, having started in the business at such a young age; "I've always wanted to be a DJ.Treat everyone fairly, do business the right way... When someone says my name, I want them to smile and come back to me, I don't want them to run away. That's the worst way to be. You don't want to do that in people. Be the best version of yourself that you can be."
