  • A world of plastic.

A world of plastic. 06 Dec

Depending on what kind, plastic can take anywhere from hundreds of years to 1000 years to break down in the environment. The massive use of such a long-lasting material in throwaway objects is a mistake with catastrophic consequences worldwide. In addition to being a dangerous form of waste for the environment, plastics that enter into contact with foodstuffs poison human beings. Plastic contains a series of toxic additives that contaminate the blood of 90% of the population, including the newly born.

Plastic in the environment breaks down into ever-smaller fragments. Nowadays, these fragments pollute all the oceans and coasts on the planet. The fragments of plastic are ingested by animals, even by microscopic beings such as plankton, thus contaminating the food chain on which we depend.

The best-known solution is recycling. However, is it really a good option? Recycling is not a sustainable solution; the vast majority of plastic waste that is collected to be recycled is, in actual fact, exported to poor countries, incinerated, converted into non-recyclable objects or thrown directly onto the rubbish tip. The true solution is rejecting single-use plastics.

Plastic pollution is not only a problem of waste, but rather of poor design. The solution is to put an end to our addiction to single-use plastics. So-called “plastic recycling” does not work and so-called “ecological plastics” create as many problems as they solve. What can we do when faced with this problem? Our advice is to reduce consumption of plastics, improve the way recycling is done on both an industrial and individual level and, above all, try to do without it in our daily life. Bear in mind that thousands of tonnes of plastic of differing sizes pollute our oceans and that they have a devastating effect on marine fauna and birds. Being at the top of the food chain, human beings are not exempt from the dangers that this grave contamination represents. If you have not realised yet, it affects you greatly.
