- Ocean Drive makes its debut in Seville in the renowned Encarnación district
Every summer, Seville bursts into life and colour with the arrival of the Velá de Santiago y Santa Ana in the iconic neighbourhood of Triana. This famous fair elevates the charm of the celebrated area. It’s not just another event in Seville, but a symbol of the identity and pride of one of the city's most historic and charismatic communities.
History of the Triana Fair
The Velá de Santiago y Santa Ana, held in the iconic Triana district of Seville, is one of the oldest and most representative festivals in the city, dating back to the 13th century. The festival originated from a promise made by King Alfonso X, who, suffering from an eye ailment, vowed to build a temple in honour of Santa Ana if he recovered. After his recovery, construction of the temple began in 1266, marking the start of this traditional celebration.
Initially, the Velá had a deeply religious character, with the people of Triana and Seville gathering on the eve of Santa Ana’s day (26th July) to keep vigil with the Virgin throughout the night. Over time, however, the event took on a more festive and popular tone, featuring dances and songs at the doorsteps of houses and along the Guadalquivir River, which has been and remains one of the main settings of the fair.
At the start of the 20th century, the Velá underwent significant changes, with the introduction of “La Cucaña” in 1910. This activity, where young people try to climb a greased pole to reach a prize at the top, has remained one of the most popular and thrilling traditions of the festival.
Over time, the Velá has lost much of its initial religious character, transforming into a celebration that not only honours the patron saints of the neighbourhood but also showcases the vibrant spirit and rich culture of Triana. Despite interruptions, such as during the Civil War and recently in 2020 due to the pandemic, it remains a central event in Seville’s cultural calendar, attracting residents and visitors alike with its unique mix of tradition, music, and delicious food.
The current celebration of the Velá de Santiago y Santa Ana
Every year, from 21st to 26th July, Triana revives this tradition with a series of activities that draw locals and visitors from all over the peninsula. The festivities kick off with the maritime procession of the Virgin del Carmen and continue with events like the cucaña, night regattas, and numerous musical and dance performances that bring life to the neighbourhood’s squares and streets.
Highlights of the Triana Fair
The Velá is celebrated from 21st to 26th July, packed with activities that capture the essence of Triana:
